Archive projects
Put projects out of sight without deleting them, and bring them back when you need them.
On this page
Archiving takes a project off your lists without deleting it. An archived project is still a whole, working project: it keeps its live site, you can still open and edit it, and it still counts toward your plan. Unarchive it and it is back where it was.
What the Archive is
Every workspace has its own Archive, built in. It is not a folder. It never appears in the Move to Folder dialog, and it does not count toward the 50 folders a workspace can hold. It has no menu of its own, so it cannot be renamed or deleted.
An archived project disappears from:
- the My projects tab on Home
/dashboard/projects, including its search results- every folder page
- the Add projects picker of a folder
It shows on the Archive page, and nowhere else on the dashboard apart from the thumbnails on the Archive card of the projects page.
Open the Archive
In the sidebar, open the caret next to Projects. Archive is the first entry in the folder list by default, with an archive box icon instead of a folder, and it is there even when you have no folders. It opens /dashboard/archive.
On /dashboard/projects, an Archive card sits among the folder cards, in the same spot as in the sidebar. Like a folder card, it shows thumbnails of the most recently edited archived projects, how many projects are archived, or No projects when none are, and how long ago anything in it was last edited, but it has no three dots menu. Click it to open the Archive. It hides while you search, like the folder cards. With no folders and every project archived, the page shows its No projects empty state with an Open Archive button instead.
You can drag Archive to any spot among your folders, the same way you reorder folders, and the position is saved for everyone in the workspace. Dragging needs the Edit folders permission, like reordering folders; without it the list stays put. When you can drag, hovering Archive swaps its icon for a drag handle. If a folder above Archive is deleted or moved to another workspace, Archive keeps its place below the folders that are left.
The page is headed Archive, with Archived projects stay out of your lists but still count toward your plan. under it, then the same Search projects box and sort control as the projects page. Search here looks only through archived projects, matching the same fields as Search and filters describes.
With nothing archived, the page reads No archived projects with Projects you archive will wait here.
An archived project still opens. Click its card on the Archive page, or use its usual link.
Archive a project
Archive is in three places:
| Where | How to reach it |
|---|---|
| The card menu | The three dots on a project card, or right click the card. Archive sits after Move to Folder and before Settings |
| The editor | Click the project name in the editor header to open the project menu. Archive sits after Move to Folder, and you stay in the project |
| The selection bar | Tick several cards and choose Archive |
Any member of the workspace can archive and unarchive projects. There is no separate permission for it.
A project that is not published is archived straight away. Its card leaves the list and a Project archived toast reads It moved to Archive and still counts toward your plan.
Archive a published project
A project with a live site asks first. The confirmation is titled Archive "
Under that sits a checkbox, Also unpublish this site, with The live URL stops serving visitors until you publish again. under it. It starts unticked. Choose Archive to confirm.
| Checkbox | What happens |
|---|---|
| Unticked | The project is archived and its site stays live at its address |
| Ticked | The project is archived and its site is unpublished too, the same as Unpublish in the Danger zone of Settings |
Unpublishing takes the live address offline until you publish again. Your project, files, database and storage are untouched. The toast then reads It moved to Archive and its site is now offline.
When the site cannot be taken offline at that moment, for example because a publish is running, the project is still archived and a Site still live toast reads A publish was running, so the site stayed online. Unpublish it from Settings once the publish has finished.
Archive several at once
Tick the cards and choose Archive on the selection bar. When none of them is published they are archived straight away. When at least one is, a confirmation titled Archive N projects?, where N is every selected project, appears with the same description and a checkbox reading Also unpublish the M live sites, where M counts only the published ones. With a single published project among them, it reads Also unpublish this site.
The toast reads Projects archived with N projects moved to Archive and still count toward your plan., or N projects moved to Archive and their sites are offline. when every one of them was unpublished. Sites that could not be taken offline stay live, and a Site still live or Sites still live toast says so.
Unarchive a project
On the Archive page, Unarchive takes the place of Archive in the card menu and on the selection bar. In the editor, the project menu of an archived project carries Unarchive instead of Archive.
There is no confirmation. A Project unarchived toast reads It is back in your projects list., or It is back in
Unarchiving never publishes or unpublishes anything.
What happens to its folder
Archiving takes a project out of its folder, so the folder's card stops counting and showing it. Modulify remembers which folder it came from, and Unarchive puts it back there as long as that folder still exists in the workspace. If the folder was deleted or moved to another workspace in the meantime, the project goes to your projects list outside any folder.
Because an archived project is in no folder, deleting a folder or moving it to another workspace leaves the archived projects that came from it where they are.
Move to Folder still works on an archived project, from its card menu, the editor or the selection bar on the Archive page. Moving it into a folder takes it out of the Archive.
Still part of your plan
Archiving tidies the dashboard. It does not save money or free a slot.
- An archived project still counts toward your site limit and is billed exactly like any other.
- Nothing about the site changes. A published site stays live at its address and keeps its custom domains, and you can still open, edit, publish, duplicate, transfer, move and delete it.
- It still takes part in locking. Archiving on its own does not change when a project was last updated, so it does not change which sites stay unlocked. Ticking Also unpublish this site counts as an update, the same as Unpublish in Settings. A locked archived project shows Locked Item on the Archive page and has no menu, so it cannot be unarchived from the dashboard until it unlocks.
- Modulify stops sending its reminder emails about an archived project, such as the ones suggesting you publish it or connect a domain.
See Limits and quotas for how sites count.
Other actions on an archived project
- Duplicate makes a copy that is not archived. The copy appears in your projects list, and on the Archive page a Project duplicated toast reads The copy is in your projects list, not the Archive.
- Move to Workspace and an accepted Transfer take the project out of the Archive. It arrives in the other workspace's projects list like any other project.
- Delete works the same as anywhere else, and it is permanent. See Delete a project.
From an AI client over MCP
archive_sites and unarchive_sites take a workspaceId and up to 200 projectIds, and both need sites:write. Sites from another workspace, sites already archived or not archived, and sites in the trash are skipped, so the client reads archivedIds or unarchivedIds to see what changed.
list_sites leaves archived sites out unless the client passes archived as true, which lists only the archived ones, and every row carries Archived. move_sites_to_folder takes an archived site out of the Archive and reports it in unarchivedIds.
Archiving over MCP never unpublishes. To take an archived site offline, the client calls unpublish_site, which needs publish:write. See archive_sites.
