Edit text inline
Change wording directly in the preview without spending credits.
On this page
Fixing a typo or rewording a heading does not need AI. The text tool lets you type over the copy in the preview, and the change is written straight into your site.
Before you begin
Inline editing is not available while AI is generating. The text button is disabled for as long as a chat job is running, and the server refuses text edits with AI is currently generating. Wait for it to finish before editing text! Wait for the job to finish, or stop it, then edit.
Turn on the text tool
The floating toolbar at the bottom centre of the preview has a T button between the cursor and the speech bubble. Click it to turn inline editing on.
Turning it on turns off the select tool and commenting. Turning it off saves anything still pending.
Edit a piece of text
- Move the pointer over the preview. Text elements highlight as you pass them.
- Click once. The element gets an outline and a small label showing its tag.
- Click the same element again. The outline becomes a text caret and you can type.
- Press Enter or click somewhere else to save. Press Escape to throw the edit away.
Ordinary single clicks are swallowed while the tool is on, so links do not navigate underneath you.
How the change is saved
Edits are batched. About a second after you stop typing they are sent together, matched against the source of your site, and written back. The preview reloads that part of the page on its own, and the batch is recorded in your version history like any other change. Nothing is charged for it.
Text that comes from your site database is handled differently. Those edits are written to the row and column they came from rather than to a source file, so the change shows up everywhere that value is used.
When an edit is skipped
Matching is exact and never guesses. If the text cannot be placed with certainty it is skipped rather than applied to the wrong place, and a toast explains which case you hit:
| What you see | What it means |
|---|---|
Some text was not saved with a note about dynamic text |
The wording could not be found in your files. Change it from the CMS tab or from chat. |
Some text was not saved with a note about appearing more than once |
The same wording exists in several places. Ask in chat so the right one is changed. |
Cannot edit this text inline |
The element mixes text and markup in a way the tool will not touch. Chat can still change it. |
Could not save text |
The request failed. Try the edit again. |
