# check_member_email

Source: https://modulify.ai/docs/api/workspaces/check-member-email

Checks one email address before inviting it, reporting whether it is already a member, already invited or free to invite.

- Title: Check an email before inviting
- Scope: `workspaces:read`
- Access: Read only
- Endpoint: `POST /v1/check_member_email`

Call it before `invite_workspace_member` so nobody is sent a second invitation by mistake. A free address answers `Email is valid.`, while a taken one comes back as an error reading `This user is already a workspace member!` or `This user already has a pending invitation!`

It also refuses your own address, with `You cannot invite yourself!`, and any address that belongs to a Modulify site. Although it only reads, it needs the **Manage members** permission (`members.manage`), the same one inviting needs. See [Members and roles](https://modulify.ai/docs/reference/members-and-roles#invite-someone).

## Request

Call it with a `POST` to `https://api.modulify.ai/v1/check_member_email`, sending the inputs below as a JSON object. The token needs the `workspaces:read` scope.

It only reads and changes nothing, so retrying it is safe.

```bash
curl -X POST https://api.modulify.ai/v1/check_member_email \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_TOKEN" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"workspaceId":"WORKSPACE_ID","email":"EMAIL"}'
```

Over MCP, the same method is the [check_member_email tool](https://modulify.ai/docs/mcp/workspaces/check-member-email).

## Inputs

| Input | Type | Required | Description |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `workspaceId` | string | Yes | The workspace id. |
| `email` | string | Yes | The email address to check. |

## Response

Every call answers with the [JSON envelope](https://modulify.ai/docs/api/requests-and-responses#the-response) of `success`, `message`, `data`, `code` and `version`. `data` holds the result described above, and on a method that returns a total, `count` carries it. The [response headers](https://modulify.ai/docs/api/requests-and-responses#headers-on-every-method-call) carry the call's `X-Request-Id` and what is left of your per-minute budget in `X-RateLimit-Limit`, `X-RateLimit-Remaining` and `X-RateLimit-Reset`. [Errors](https://modulify.ai/docs/api/errors) explains every status code a call can answer with.
